Man jailed after stealing sentimental items from pensioner

A Birmingham man has been jailed after stealing a wallet from a 79-year-old which contained a precious locket of his late wife’s hair.

Iftikhar Sarmad, from Underhill Road in Alum Rock, has been jailed for two and a half years.

Iftikhar Sarmad has been jailed

He was sentenced on Monday (19 July) at Birmingham Crown Court for robbery and dangerous driving.

We arrested Mr Sarmad in May, a day after he robbed the 79-year-old man at a bus stop in Hodge Hill.

The man’s wallet, which contained photos and a locket filled with his late wife’s hair, was stolen. We found this in a nearby drain that criminals hide weapons and stolen property in.

Our officer hands the irreplaceable locket of hair back to the pensioner

You might remember that we shared a story with you of the moment when we handed the wallet back to the man. It was a really emotional time for everyone. Especially when he kissed the locket and said: “I could never replace this.”
