Police appeal for information into Newtown shooting

Police are appealing for information into a shooting on Monday 11 September in the Newtown area of Birmingham.

A 24-year-old man was shot in the leg twice in Wheeler Street just before 5pm after what is believed to be a verbal altercation with a group.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who heard any gun shots or saw any suspicious behaviour at the time.

Investigating officer Ian Leech from the Perry Barr CID team, said:

“The road is quite busy near to the Nishkam School and it is likely there was passing traffic at the time from people travelling home from work.

“Although the man was not found to have life threatening injuries after treatment at hospital, the danger this person was put in is inexcusable.

“We must find who is responsible. I would urge anyone who saw the people they believe to be involved to call me.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting 20BW/194237K/17 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The shooting came just before the force announced a two week firearms surrender – more information on this can be found here.
