Police are investigating a shooting on Mallin Street near to the junction of Highbury Road in Smethwick just before 9pm yesterday (Tuesday 8 October).

A 21-year-old man was taken to hospital with a serious injury to his eye. He remains there today (Wednesday).

Enquiries continue to establish the exact circumstances around the incident and part of Highbury Road at the junction with Mallin Street remains closed.

Detective Sergeant Lee Bailey, from Force CID, team, said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation and I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area last night and may have heard or seen anything.

“A man was walking down the road when a large dark coloured 4x4 type car stopped alongside him and shot at him, before driving away. We are aware that a person walking down Mallin Street witnessed the incident before fleeing on foot. We are particularly interested in speaking to this person. We are also keen to speak to any drivers who were in the general area, especially if they have dashcam footage.
