Police seek information on Birmingham conman

Police are seeking information about a man who conned his way into a home in Stechford Road, Hodge Hill, while posing as a police officer.

A few days beforehand, the victim had received letter that was alleged to have come from West Midlands Police traffic process office regarding a collision in his car. Since the 41-year-old man had in fact been involved in a collision, he believed the correspondence to be real.

The letter indicated that the case was being dealt with by a detective constable with the fictitious name of A Shah.

This was followed up by visit from a man dressed in what resembled a uniform and claiming to be Detective Constable Shah. He showed the victim an identification card which appeared to be from the police and asked him to go and get his vehicle documents. The man said that he would phone the police to confirm the officer’s ID and at this point, the man left, saying he needed to get his phone from his car.
He got into a silver Ford Mondeo registration number similar to L4 TNF or L4 TFF and drove away.

Detective Constable Nigel Box, from Force CID, said: “Our advice to anyone who receives an official visitor at their home and is unsure whether they are genuine, is to contact the company they claim to represent. This man did exactly the right thing by doing so.

“We are appealing for anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV images or has information about this person to get in contact with us by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 giving reference BE/140233H/17."
