Update on incident in West Bromwich
Detectives investigating after two police officers were injured in West Bromwich yesterday morning (21 July) have been given extra time to question the three people we have in custody.
The officers were patrolling New Square in the town centre just before 11.30am as they had been granted extra powers to carry out stop checks following an increase in violence and robberies over the last few days.
They received superficial slash injuries and have now been discharged from hospital. They are recovering at home with support from us.
Two men, aged 41 and 37, and a 31-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and we’ve been granted an extra 12 hours to question them.
Detective Inspector Jackie Nicholson, from our force CID, said: “Our investigation continues at speed today, as we try to understand what happened.
“The officers are both understandably shaken by what happened, as we know other officers and staff are, as well as our communities.
“A CCTV trawl is being carried out and a number of witnesses are being spoken to.
“We continue to support our colleagues throughout their recovery - and others affected by what has happened and during our ongoing investigation.”
